A BRIEF HISTORY OF TOYOTA
Family roots run deep in the Toyota Motor Company, starting from the very beginning: Sakichi Toyota set things in motion by inventing an engine to help automate the weaving process for the textile industry. His son, Kiichiro, realized that that engine expertise would translate well into the auto industry and built the 1933 AA Sedan — the first car sold under the “Toyoda” name. The AA was so successful that the younger Toyoda devoted his full-time energy to establishing the business as a stand-alone automaker. He also changed the new company’s name to “Toyota” since it had more positive meanings in Japanese.
Expansion to the United States began in 1957, although Toyota tallied fewer than 300 sales in its first year here. Perhaps the turning point came in 1972, when the company’s lineup of efficient cars proved especially popular due to the oil crisis. In fact, Toyota’s U.S. sales topped 1 million units that year. The company became the No. 1 import brand in the country in 1975 and only kept on growing. It even began building its vehicles in the U.S. back in the 1980s.
