The Subaru brand — which takes its name from the Japanese word for the Pleiades star cluster — was born in 1954 with the launch of the Subaru 1500. Yet, at that time, it was only one small part of a huge manufacturing conglomerate known as Fuji Heavy Industries. Fuji itself was formed after World War II to bring together a variety of equipment manufacturers that includes an engine builder, a chassis maker, and a coachbuilder. So the creation of an actual car came as no real surprise.
What’s more unexpected is that Subaru had so much success that Fuji rebranded its entire business with that name in 2017. Needless to say, Subaru’s automotive momentum was greatly helped when it began exporting cars to the United States in 1967, invented its first symmetrical all-wheel-drive system in 1972, and built its first U.S. manufacturing plant in 1989.
