A BRIEF HISTORY OF MAZDA
The Mazda brand’s reputation for hot handling is no surprise when considering the twisty road the company took to become a successful automaker. The starting point was actually the Toyo Cork Kogyo company that, true to its name, began life as a cork producer in Hiroshima in 1920. Financial ups and downs saw the company also try its hand at machine tools, and then, in 1931, it began producing motorized trikes with small cargo boxes mounted on the back. These vehicles were the first to wear the Mazda name, but it was another 30 years or so before the company started building passenger cars.
The real turning point came in 1974 when Mazda entered into a long-term partnership with Ford that lasted until 2015. The relationship eventually saw Mazda platforms underpin popular Blue Oval models like the Ford Escort and Fiesta, while Mazda leveraged the Ford Ranger pickup for its popular B-Series trucks.
